Pembroke / St Andrews Scout Group - Trip to Pembroke Wales

Last March, a contingent of twenty six Scouts and Leaders from the Pembroke / St Andrews Scout Group together with various members from the Pembroke Local Council, were lucky enough to be invited to travel to Pembroke in Wales. This  trip was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Scouting worldwide.

Well the big day finally arrived and after a very pleasant flight, we then had a five-hour coach journey, thus arriving at our destination in the very early hours on Friday morning.  In spite of this however, we found some Welsh Scouters waiting for us, as well as hot drinks and light refreshments!  We really welcomed something to warm us up, as the temperature was outside was -1 degree Centigrade!  We only managed a couple of hours sleep that night, before waking up bright and early, all eager to see what was in store for us.

So on Friday morning we first visited Pembroke Town Hall and Pembroke Dock Town Hall where the Mayors of both Councils gave us a very warm welcome, with refreshments to follow.  After that we made our way to Pembroke Castle, where we toured around the various rooms and extensive grounds.  Our next stop was the Gun Tower where the tour guides present, who also happened to be scout leaders, showed us around.  Before leaving, they very kindly presented the boys with a souvenir each.  We then proceeded to the Scout headquarters where we were introduced to the Leaders, Scouts and Cubs from the Pembroke Groups.  After a good supper, the boys were free to relax and play various Scouting games .

On the following day we visited St David's City, where we had time to go around the beautiful Cathedral and then to do some shopping.  Afterwards it was time for the boys to get some fresh air.  So what better place than by the beach!  Here the boys enjoyed a rough game, in spite of the very windy weather.  Our next stop was as at "Lys-Y-Fran", a Country Park and reservoir.  Under the water in the reservoir, lies a sunken village, which was sacrificed to build a dam.  We had to leave this beautiful spot to get back to our lodgings in time to freshen up and attend Mass in a nearby Catholic Church.  Once again in the evening our boys had a great time socialising and playing scouting games with the Scouts and Ventures from the various Pembroke Groups.

On Sunday we had a whole day activity at Pembroke castle.  This was the day in which we  celebrated the centenary of scouting, together with many members from the various Welsh Scout Groups.  Despite the rainy weather various events still went on and the boys had a good time. Their favourite game was Greasy Poles where they had to balance on a slippery pipe and try to drop their opponent by hitting him with a cushion.

Monday was the last day of our holiday! So after packing and tidying up, we left by coach for Cardiff.  There we had time to walk around, have a good meal and do some shopping.
Even though the trip involved a lot of preparation and was a big responsibility for all the leaders present, it was a wonderful experience for all and one which we will always cherish.
